"What inspired me the most from being a student of Brent Johnson, was his passion to provide the students with a great learning experience while achieving excellence. This, paired with his concise assessment and feedback made him one of the most effective instructors I’ve had in my musical career. His students not only felt intellectually challenged, but cared for and included. His professionalism helped me understand excellence in a competitive market. My exceptional experience as a student of Brent encouraged me to pursue my own career as a music educator. My passion for music that developed from his class prepared me to achieve excellence in college."

"Mr. Johnson's bright disposition and encouraging personality made him an effective and inspiring teacher. Rehearsals in his band were always fun but productive, and students across all abilities and age levels respected him and valued his opinion. He had high expectations but also always provided us with ways to achieve those goals, whether it was practice methods to play Tchaikovsky at Carnegie Hall or confidence to stand tall at the big marching competition. He also was always very supportive on a one-on-one level; I and other students who advanced along the individual audition process in Texas (region and all-state bands) were encouraged and motivated by his attendance at our auditions and concerts. His influence on me was that teachers need to be role models in addition to just knowledgeable in their field, and you can only be respected as a teacher if you give your students the same respect and consideration. This is a valuable lesson to me as I have moved into the field of professional music and teaching of my own."

"My high school experience would not have been the same without the impact that Mr. Johnson had in my life. Mr. Johnson knew the perfect balance between musician and motivator. He deeply cared about his students, but also pushed us every day to advance in our skills. I could clearly see Mr. Johnson’s passion and that made me work harder to develop my passion and connection with the music. I grew closer to my bandmates and my directors through my deeper understanding behind the meaning of our music that Mr. Johnson taught me. He conducted himself with class, passion, and pure joy to be teaching music every time I worked with him. Mr. Johnson helped to shape me into the confident and strong woman that I am today. He has inspired me countless times to pursue my passions and love what I do. Although I have not pursued a music career, I can say with confidence that Mr. Johnson showed me what a compassionate teacher really is. As a future educator, I hope to emulate Mr. Johnson’s caring personality and intentionality with his students. He knew me, he cared about me, and he only wanted to see me succeed in my endeavors."
